Fotografieausstellung bei basis e.V. zu #WilhelmMerton. Metall & Gesellschaft im Jüdischen Museum Frankfurt
Die Ausstellung hit pay dirt zeigt die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung
von Lena Bils und Johanna Schlegel mit dem Erbe Wilhelm Mertons aus zwei ganz unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln. Sie ergänzt die aktuelle Sonderausstellung Metall & Gesellschaft im Jüdischen Museum Frankfurt (16. Mai 2023 bis 7. Januar 2024), in der Mertons Biografie, sein Wirken und der geschichtliche Kontext thematisiert wird.
hit pay dirt fügt sich ins Rahmenprogramm des Frankfurter Wilhelm Merton-Jubiläumsjahres ein. Wie nähern wir uns einer historischen Persönlichkeit und deren Vermächtnis mit den Mitteln der Fotografie? Johanna Schlegel und Lena Bils haben Antworten auf diese Frage gefunden und greifen Aspekte des Lebens und Wirkens von Wilhelm Merton künstlerisch auf. Schlegel nimmt die geschichtliche Verwebung eines Porträtgemäldes Wilhelm Mertons über dessen Tod hinaus als Ausgangspunkt ihrer Arbeit. Bils beschäftigt sich mit einem Thema, das zu Lebzeiten Mertons noch kaum beachtet wurde: der langfristigen Belastung und Zerstörung der Umwelt durch die intensive Metallwirtschaft im australischen Bergbauort Broken Hill.

The exhibition hit pay dirt shows Lena Bils' and Johanna Schlegel's artistic exploration of Wilhelm Merton's legacy from two very different perspectives. It complements the current special exhibition Metal & Society at the Jewish Museum Frankfurt (May 16, 2023 to January 7, 2024), which focuses on Merton's biography, his work, and the historical context.
Wilhelm Merton (1848-1916) was an important entrepreneur, philanthropist and pioneer for 20th century Frankfurt. Among other things, he was a co-founder of Goethe University in Frankfurt and campaigned for fairer working conditions and a company pension. The company Metallgesell- schaft AG, which he co-founded in Frankfurt am Main in 1881, was one of the world's largest mining, metal processing and trading companies until the First World War.
hit pay dirt fits into the framework program of Frankfurt's Wilhelm Merton anniversary year. The works shown here provide a detailed and comprehensive view of two different aspects of Merton's work: the impact of the metal company's mining operations in Broken Hill, Australia, and the historical interweaving of a portrait painting of Wilhelm Merton beyond his death.
