10 years LICHTER Art Award
the lichter art award celebrates its 10th anniversary! the competition has stablished itself as a renowned international platform for contemporary video art. whether from singapore or peruvian lima - this year more than 160 works by video artists and filmmakers from all over the world were submitted, from which five were nominatted for the 10th lichter art award.
The selected works - from documentaries, essay films and animations to fictional and real stories - were chosen by the three-member jury consisting of the artist Natasha A. Kelly, Gerhard Wissner Ventura, director of the Kassel Docfest, and Saul Judd, chief curator of the LICHTER Art Award. They deal with social and political conflicts and provide insights into social phenomena of our present and past. In their range of variation, the works show various tendencies in contemporary video and film art.

The works of the five nominated artists will be shown at the LICHTER Filmfest from December 4, 2020 to January 17, 2021 in a curated exhibition in the premises of basis e.V. In addition, the exhibition will also include a review of the video art of the winners and finalists of previous years.

Vanessa Gravenor // This Weapon Drags Like a Boomerang

In her video essay This Weapon Drags Like a Boomerang Vanessa Gravenor questions the aftermath of the business of wars and conflicts in the world stage in the last few decades. Asking questions like “what else does my body carry along with the drag of one Kalashnikov bullet?” she reveals some aspects in which ways weaponry and violence perpetuates throughout our history and its consequences in the present time. And doing so she questions what is known as the “present truth”.
Vanessa Gravenor 1973 born, is an artist, art critic and Filmmaker. She lives in Berlin. She studied at Osloer Universität und an der Berger Academy of Fine Arts. Constantin Hartenstein // NARC

The video installation NARC by Constantin Hartenstein reflects on the narcissistic phenomena of a digital society and its fitness industry, which aims at physical self-optimization. In times of Instagram & TikTok, when the physical appearance is most important, content no longer matters.
Constantin Hartenstein 1982 born, lives in Berlin. Studied at Braunschweig University of Art, University of the Arts Berlin and at the Akademie Vytvarnych Umeni, Prague. Florencia Levy // Fossil Place

Fossil Place is a journey into the past and a view on the probable future of humanity. The imagery and the content of this film essay - shown in a 4 channel installation - from Florencia Levy make us think what have we as civilisation accomplish and what is to come ahead sometimes in an almost dystopian view. Using documentary material and narrative sounds Fossil Place take us to more than 40 years of environmental and economic realities of different cities in China. With this work Levy proposes questions like : “How to establish an intimate relationship with a geological formation? At what point air became a relic”.
Florencia Levy 1979 born, lives in Buenos Aires. She studied at the National University of Arts (UNA), Buenos Aires and Central Saint Martins College of Arts & Design, London. Pol Merchan // Pirate Boys

With the work Pirate Boys Pol Merchan produced an experimental film with a hybrid form between fiction and documentary which deals with transmasculinity. In a personal level Merchan attempts to connect to his trans and queer experience. The works of Kathy’s Acker (New York, 1947) who was associated with the anti-formalist and punk movements and the photographic works of Del LaGrace Volcano (California, 1957) who shown how intersex bodies can offer an entirely new perspective on the body plays an important rolle in the film. Pirate Boys is an experiment with the plasticity of the literary and the filmic body, the physical body itself. and a performative exploration of gender.
Pol Merchan 1980 born in Spain, lives in Berlin. He studied at the Universidad de Barcelona and at the Berlin University of Arts. Maria Molina Peiró // The Sasha

n 1972 the astronaut Charles Duke landed on the moon with the Apollo XVI capsule. He was responsible for taking photos of the surface of the moon with a high-resolution camera. The Sasha by Maria Molina Peiró examines the constant human struggle with temporal and spatial restrictions and questions the narrative through the veracity of the photographic documentation. From space exploration to cyberspace, from an analog moon in 1972 to a virtual moon on Google Earth today. A story about parallel universes in which the eternity between frames and interfaces seems lost.
Maria Molina Peiró originally from Spain, lives in Amsterdam. She studied at the Universidad de Artes de Sevilla and the Netherlands Film Academy. Exhibitions and film festivals include the International Film Festival Rotterdam IFFR, Rencontres Internationales, House of World Cultures, International Film Festival Oberhausen, Louvre Museum, EYE Film Museum, ISEA Korea, London Science Museum, Hong-Gah Museum, Taipei and Taiwan Video Art biennial.
The Jury of the 10th LICHTER Art Award
Gerhard Wissner Ventura, born 1962, master studies at University of Kassel: sociology, political and educational sciences, since 1985 participation at Filmladen Kassel e.V., since 1989 programmer and curator for the Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival (focus on short film and installations), 1995 founder and co-owner of the BALi cinemas Kassel, since 1997 festival director of Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival.
Freelance curator, a selection: 1998, 2002 Werkleitz Biennale, 1997, 2002, 2007 organization and realization of the documenta film program and dOCUMENTA (13), Co-curator of Emerging Artists (AG Kurzfilm / German Films Vol. 1 - 3.); jury activity for numerous national and international festivals among others Cinema Vérité Teheran, DOK.fest München, dokumentarfilmwoche hamburg, Images Festival Toronto.
Natasha A. Kelly is an artist, scholar activist and author of five books, including "Afro-Culture. The Space Between Yesterday and Tomorrow". Her award-winning film "Milli's Awakening" was commissioned by the 10th Berlin Biennale in 2018 and screened in national and international contexts. Natasha has a PhD in Communication Studies and Sociology from the University Münster, Germany and is a member of the Black Speculative Arts Movement (BSAM). Her multidisciplinary works focus on the past, present and future of the Black Community in Germany.
Saul Judd is an independent curator based in Frankfurt, Germany. Since 2010 he has been responsible for the video art section of the LICHTER Filmfest Frankfurt International. He conceived exhibitions with artists such as Keren Cytter and Mike Bouchet in the context of the festival until he created the LICHTER Art Award in 2011. He started to curate the LICHTER Short Films International program in 2015. Among his projects BLANK SLATE a publication about art, architecture and design he started in 2016 with SCHAUT! - a series of exhibitions of contemporary art film and video art at the MAL SEH’N movie theater in Frankfurt. In 2017 he presented the artist John Skoog as a guest curator for Double Feature at Schirn Kunsthalle.

10 Jahre LICHTER Art Award
Der LICHTER Art Award feiert Jubiläum! Seit 10 Jahren überzeugt der Wettbewerb als renommierte internationale Plattform für zeitgenössische Videokunst. Ob aus Singapur oder dem peruanischen Lima – dieses Jahr wurden 160 Werke von Videokünstler*innen und Filmemacher*innen aus aller Welt eingereicht, aus denen fünf Finalist*innen um den 10. LICHTER Art Award konkurrieren.
Die ausgewählten Werke – von Dokumentar- über Essayfilmen, Animationen bis hin zu fiktiven und realen Erzählungen – wurden von der dreiköpfigen Jury bestehend aus der Künstlerin Natasha A. Kelly, Gerhard Wissner Ventura, Leiter des Kasseler Dokfests, und Saul Judd, leitender Kurator LICHTER Art Award, ausgewählt. Sie handeln von sozialen und politischen Konflikten, geben Einblicke in gesellschaftliche Phänomene unserer Gegenwart und Vergangenheit. In ihrer Variationsbreite zeigen die Arbeiten verschiedene Tendenzen der gegenwärtigen Video- und Filmkunst auf.

Die Werke der fünf nominierten Künstler*innen zeigt das LICHTER Filmfest vom 3. Dezember 2020 bis zum 17. Januar 2021 in einer kuratierten Ausstellung in den Räumlichkeiten bei basis e.V. Darüber hinaus wird es im Rahmen der Ausstellung auch einen Rückblick auf die Videokunst der Gewinner*innen und Finalist*innen vergangener Jahre geben.

In ihrem Video-Essay "This Weapon Drags Like a Boomerang" hinterfragt Vanessa Gravenor die Folgen des Geschäfts mit Kriegen und Konflikten auf der Weltbühne in den letzten Jahrzehnten. Welche Spuren hinterlässt ein Krieg bei der Gesellschaft? Sie enthüllt, wie Waffen und Gewalt in unserer Geschichte und der Gegenwart fortbestehen. Dabei hinterfragt sie die sogenannte „gegenwärtige Wahrheit“.

Die Videoinstallation NARC von Constantin Hartenstein reflektiert über die narzisstischen Phänomene einer digitalen Gesellschaft und ihrer Fitnessindustrie, die auf Selbstoptimierung abzielt. Bilder und Inhalt dieses Film-Essays von Florencia Levy - gezeigt in einer 4-Känale-Installation - lassen uns durch eine fast dystopische Sichtweise darüber nachdenken, was wir als Zivilisation erreicht haben. Mit dokumentarischem Material und narrativen Klängen führt uns Fossil Place durch mehr als 40 Jahre ökologischer und wirtschaftlicher Realität in China.

Pol Merchan // Pirate Boys

Mit Pirate Boys produziert Pol Merchan einen hybriden Experimentalfilm zwischen Fiktion und Dokumentation, der sich mit trans Maskulinität befasst. Auf autobiographischer Ebene erzählt Merchan von seinen queeren Erfahrungen. Dabei spielen Arbeiten von Kathy Acker (New York, 1947) zur Anti-Formalisten- und Punk-Bewegung und Del LaGrace Volcano (Kalifornien, 1957) zum intersexuelle Körper eine wichtige Rolle. Pirate Boys experimentiert mit der Plastizität des literarischen und filmischen Körpers und der performativen Erforschung des Geschlechts.

Im Jahr 1972 landet der Astronaut Charles Duke mit der Apollo XVI auf dem Mond. Er ist dafür verantwortlich, mit einer hochauflösenden Kamera Fotos von der Mondoberfläche zu machen. The Sasha von Maria Molina Peiró untersucht den ständigen Kampf mit zeitlichen und räumlichen Einschränkungen - und stellt durch die Wahrhaftigkeit der fotografischen Dokumentation die Erzählung in Frage. Von der Erforschung des Weltraums bis zum Cyberspace, von einem analogen Mond im Jahr 1972 bis zu einem virtuellen Mond auf Google Earth heute. Eine Geschichte über Paralleluniversen, in denen die Ewigkeit zwischen Frames und Interfaces verloren scheint.

Gerhard Wissner Ventura, geboren 1962, Magisterstudium der Soziologie, Politik- und Erziehungswissenschaften; seit 1985 Mitarbeit im Filmladen Kassel e.V. Seit 1989 Programmmacher und Kurator für das Kasseler Dokumentarfilm- und Videofest (Schwerpunkte: Kurzfilm, Installationen), seit 1997 dessen Festivalleiter. Seit 1995 Gründer und Mitinhaber der BALi Kinos Kassel. Freie Kuratorentätigkeit u.a. Werkleitz Biennale (1998, 2002); Organisatorische Umsetzung der „documenta-Filmreihen“ 1997, 2002 und 2007. Mitarbeit 2010 - 2012 Maybe Education and Public Programs der dOCUMENTA (13). Natasha A. Kelly ist Künstlerin, Wissenschaftlerin, Aktivistin und Autorin von fünf Büchern, darunter "Afrokultur- der Raum zwischen gestern und morgen”. Ihr preisgekrönter Film "Milli's Awakening" wurde 2018 von der 10. Berlin Biennale in Auftrag gegeben und im nationalen und internationalen Kontext gezeigt. Kelly promovierte in Kommunikationswissenschaften und Soziologie an der Universität Münster und ist Mitglied des Black Speculative Arts Movement (BSAM). Ihre multidisziplinären Arbeiten konzentrieren sich auf Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft der Black Community in Deutschland.
Saul Judd, freier Kurator in Frankfurt, ist verantwortlich für die Videokunst-Sektion des LICHTER Filmfest Frankfurt International. Im Rahmen des Festivals konzipierte er Ausstellungen mit namhaften Künstler*innen wie Keren Cytter und Mike Bouchet, bis er 2011 den LICHTER Art Award initiierte. Seit 2015 kuratiert er das LICHTER International Shorts Filmprogramm. Weitere Projekte sind BLANK SLATE, eine Publikation über Kunst, Architektur und Design und seit Januar 2016 SCHAUT! - eine Ausstellungsreihe im MAL SEH’N Kino in Frankfurt. Als Gastkurator der Filmreihe Double Feature an der Schirn Kunsthalle präsentierte er 2017 den Künstler John Skoog.
